The Benefits of Bespoke Alumni Career Services

In response to demand for additional career-related support upon completion of their studies, in February 2015 UTS:Careers launched Alumni Career Services tailored specifically to alumni requirements. New graduates have benefited considerably from the additional recruitment cycle support. More broadly, we've seen an increase in alumni engagement with the university through attendance at professional development events, sharing their career success stories, and by hiring UTS interns and graduates at their own organisations. Alumni have also reported a greater feeling of overall connectedness with UTS by knowing development opportunities and guidance are available to them throughout their careers, regardless of geographic location.

• Dedicated Alumni Career Services website housed on the UTS Alumni site, rather than the student facing site, reassures Alumni that services are tailored to them

• The professional development event series has proven very popular as a way for UTS to further engage with alumni, showcase the Alumni Career Services, provide a networking opportunity across faculties, and demonstrate the university’s commitment to ongoing learning and success for our alumni community

• Student benefits such as free access to’s online learning portal have been extended to alumni

• Alumni and students are encouraged to share their career success stories through the “Career Snapshots” series, which in turn helps educate current students about the range of career paths and to remove the mystery surrounding some industries and job titles

• Employers encourage their UTS alumni employees to submit career snapshots too as a way to further increase brand awareness on campus and educate students

• Through the Alumni Career Coach, employers are provided with a new channel to promote relevant employment opportunities to UTS alumni

Potentially or currently benefits the NAGCAS organisations, its members and the career development industry

• Provides NAGCAS members and institutions with a successful Alumni Career Services model to considering implementing

• While some institutions allow graduates to utilise the student career services for up to two additional years, the benefits of the Alumni Career Services seen in a short space of time at UTS reiterate the importance of providing bespoke career resources tailored to suit the audience

A degree of innovation

• Very few universities, particularly in Australia, offer bespoke Alumni Career Services

• Use of technology such as resources available online, skype and email services, ensures alumni can access the service regardless of geographic location

• Multiple communication channels and resources allows alumni to utilise a combination of content and services as suited to their personal requirements (e.g. fortnightly career-focused publications to alumni LinkedIn groups, free access to CareerHub’s job board and resources for all alumni, an alumni resume review email service, and one-to-one consultations with the Alumni Career Coach offered in person, by Skype or over the phone)

• The service continues to evolve as we explore e-mentoring platforms to connect students with alumni, virtual events, international tours, and webinars
